Meta Tag Resources for Internet Marketing

Return to the Resources Page

This is a companion page to the law firm marketing book Courting Your Clients: The Essential Guide to Legal Marketing.

The World Wide Web Consortium (WC3) is the international governing body for the development, implementation and oversight of HTML document structure, including meta tags.

A sample of the metatags that should appear in between the beginning *<*HEAD*>* and the ending *<*/HEAD*>* tags somewhere near the top of the page are as follows:(1)

*<*title*>"Title of 6-12 Words Will Appear at Top of Web page"<*/title*>

*<*meta name=""keywords"" content=""up" to 20 keywords here, separated by commas">*

*<*meta name=""description"" content=""enter" your description of 200 characters or less here">*

*<*meta name=""author"" content=""Firm" Name Here">*

*<*meta name=""copyright"" content=""Copyright" © 2007">*

*<*meta name=""expires"" content=""31" December 2010">*

*<*meta name=""robots"" content=""index,follow"">*

*<*meta name=""GOOGLEBOT"" content=""index,follow"">*

*<*meta name=""revisit-after"" content=""15" days">*

(1)I discovered when preparing this page that I needed to insert an asterisk (*) around certain aspects of the meta tags in order to get them to display on the page. In real use you will not see the * marks.

There are many automated tools to test your meta tags for accuracy and completeness. Just go to Google and search for a "free meta tag analyzer." Click here for a sample meta tag analyzer.

It is easy to view your meta tags by opening the web page of interest in a browser, then click on "View" from the top browser menu bar, then "Source." Your HTML code will open in a new text page and you should see your meta tags near the top of the page. Ask your webmaster for help. (If your webmaster can't help you, perhaps you need a new webmaster!)

Some of these metatags may not apply to your site, while there may be others that are not listed here that you should include. Speak to your webmaster about your individual requirements.
